Today I will talk about raising indigenous birds, also known as “road runners”. A lot of people have been asking me to write something about them, so here goes.

First, a word on breeds. There are many breeds of these birds,of all sizes and forms and I shall not go into specifics. Rather, I want to discuss the value of “selecting” and management for profit.

Selecting your breeding stock is an important starting point. Choose cocks with big frames, as this is an important trait. Also choose those which are the fastest growing among the flock. For the females, choose a femine-looking hen, with soft belly and with pubic bones fairly wide apart. This shows a well-developed reproductive system and potential for laying.
